Mato is seven!

For her seventh birthday Matotea wanted cupcakes, so she could take some to school to share with her friends......I found an awesome, if rather wicked recipe here (I didn't do the ganache it seems too much, but I did do a rather good white chocolate frosting with lots of sprinkles).
Delicious!

Princess for a day!

Heimana, my cheeky little monkey, turned three yesterday, and of course there were children balloons and a rather tasty passion fruit sponge!

Birthday Floods!

My birthdays are becoming more and more difficult to handle, and it isn't just becuase I turned 35 this year! Already we have the whole birthday grinch issue (i.e. my husband, who doesn't believe in celebrating birthdays or having fun! And while it's refreshingly non-consumer society, I do like to do something a bit special on my big day, even if it's just a bit of time off with my peeps!). Thank goodness for my adorable girls, who are always willing to help me eat some cake and blow out a few candles!

Anyhow, I'm beginning to think I'm jinxed. Last year, very unfortunately, my father-in-law passed away on the 11th, this year it was a natural disaster rather than a family tragedy. A freak storm hit Rurutu on tuesday evening and we had more than 12 hours of seriously heavy rain. There were powercuts and lightning to top it all off - Matotea and Heimana, inspired by Peppa Pig, decided to provide some light entertainment while the lights were off, Matotea put on her own TV show, and Heimana just liked wearing the cardboard box!
It did eventually stop mid-afternoon, after we had watched Titanic for the second time that day (even with the powercuts), then there was the inevitable cleanup afterwards. Even our new guttering couldn't stop the terrace from getting more than a little damp.....
The airport and runway were turned into a marshland (above and below), so that the regular flight was canceled and our poor guests were stranded in Tahiti until thursday afternoon, when things had dried up a bit.....
.....it reminded me a bit of a rather amusing time I spent trying to get to Cairns in a rental car with my good friend Amy, a few years ago now. It was the rainy season and predictably enough there were very heavy rains in Queensland, we were driving north from Brisbane and suddenly got to a spot in the road where someone was kayaking towards us down the highway between stranded trucks!! Needless to say we didn't get to Cairns that day! I guess the upside of all the drama is that I got the evening off, and there was a really beautiful watery sunset!

However I am a little worried about next year!

Mato's birthday bash!

Today was Matotea's fifth birthday, and between guesthouse duties and rugby world cup semi-finals, we managed to squeeze in a birthday party. I've just come back from my evening pick up at meme's, and they're both utterly shattered and fast asleep, a real birthday party exhaustion sleep........there are few things quite as satisfying as seeing them both quite so tired out.
I came a cross an inflatable mini bouncy castle, while we were in Tahiti, and it turned out to be an inspired gift choice, albeit a little unwieldy to take to grandma's!

Even Viriamu, the birthday grinch, seemed to enjoy the party!

Heimana is Two

In amidst the heiva festivities we found some time to celebrate Heimana's birthday, with her sibs and cousins. The balloons and candles were a great hit!

Birthday Girl

Matotea celebrated her fourth birthday yesterday, in a pink fairy princess outfit! What could a little girl of four want more, aside from the ultimate Dora DVD collection and a paddling pool?
To blow out the candles maybe?

At the end of a long day even little princesses have their moods!

Birthdays galore

The most recent picture I have of the birthday girl Aunty Sue,
with Uncle Dave, way back when at Rob and Louise's wedding
This week in October is our family birthday week. It started yesterday with my big brother, today is my lovely Aunty Sue's birthday, then it's my nephew Oliver on thursday, Mato's on friday and husband Viri's on sunday! A full week of festivities! Break out the champers and get out the balloons!

Grandmere's birthday flowers

By the magic of internet Matotea sent Grandmere some lovely birthday blooms........
Happy Birthday Grandmere from all of us girls!

The cake cutting

More pictures of Heimana's first birthday (for those who didn't get enough shots of the birthday girl), as always first birthday parties are more about the sibs than the baby, like Matotea she didn't really know what was going on, though it was quite amusing to watch the other kids running around in raptures, and chocolate cake is always welcome!

Kids 'n' balloons

A timeless combination....... a first few pictures of Heimana's birthday celebrations.......

Today was not my birthday.....

...but we celebrated it, as if it was! I turned 33 on the 11th and, as usual, Viriamu had forgotten....I'm used to it by now, but the funniest thing is that we have another British-Rurutu family staying with us, and they have exactly the same birthday/holiday issues! As we had a houseful on sunday we decided to have a bit of a celebration today.....with a bit of help from our friends, Viriamu organized a nice low-key evening, with a BBQ and birthday cake. He even bought me flowers, so I'm going to have to start swallowing my words if he continues like this! It's been really fun to meet another family dealing with the same cross-cultural issues as us. Matotea, in particular, is just LOVING having three english-french speaking kids to play with, they're all older, so she's struggling to keep up, but, as always, she's still managing to be the center of attention. It's been the best birthday I've celebrated in Rurutu, so far!

The Big 4..0h!

Viriamu turned forty on saturday, of course he didn't even remember it was his birthday, but I figured it was a milestone worth celebrating, particularly because of a happy coincidence. Maeva and Marco from Moorea happened to come to visit over the same weekend. Maeva was here back in june for a music festival, she is a great singer and show-woman, so she very kindly put on an informal show for us.

Uschi, one of her friends had made us a beautiful painting of A'a Viriamu's family tiki with things Rurutu (whales and atae the flowers which bloom to announce the arrival of the whales in Rurutu).

It was a beautiful evening, with champers and a very dense chocolate gateau that I made, topped with frozen strawberries - how exotic!

Matotea made her musical debut playing the spoons......

Now we are three!

Matotea has now celebrated her third birthday, with balloons and lots and LOTS of candle blowing, (bubble-blowing is also an acceptable substitute, or even her new Peppa Pig 'Bubbles' DVD).

We didn't get as many pictures as we should have (sorry gomere, gopere), mainly because we are still submerged in guests, but I did get this great shot of her on her NEW bicycle - ready to go to school this morning!
